Friday 4th May
Ever mindful of the speed at which the days are passing, I decided to complete my walking tour of Adelaide.
Parliament House was built in two stages, the first part was finished in 1889 and the second in 1939. The Railway station nearby is also home to the casino, complete with very forbidding looking bouncers. (No, I didn't try to get in...)
From the railway station I passed the Festival Centre and walked along the river bank with its black swans
along to the Botanical gardens. I managed to get a photo (just) of quite the noisiest birds I have ever heard. (They can be heard all the time but are usually quite high up in the trees.)
Took more photos of the wonderful Australian trees,
and the beautiful gardens
then walked back into the city to continue the search for the perfect Uggs! The retail therapy continued this evening when I went with my friend, Emma to Ikea to buy lamps for her new flat. I can report that the Australian Ikea is pretty much like the ones in the UK but without Sheila's influence I bought nothing! (Well, suitcases and airports had some thing to do with it; I have earmarked a few items for my next visit to Bordeaux!) One big difference was that we got a park (OZspeak) right next to the door and the store was nearly empty.
Saturday 5th May
This morning I took my neighbour to the farmers' market at Willunga. For once it was the genuine thing, all smallholders selling their own produce. Had I not been going away tomorrow I would have returned laden with goods, but Bev, (my neighbour) made up for it. It really was a lovely market, very friendly and full of good humour,
despite the grey skies.
We then drove on to Yankalilla which became famous thanks to the image of Jesus and the Virgin Mary which mysteriously appeared on the (inside) church wall. Despite a period of quiet and calm, we had to admit to not really being able to see it. :-(
However, Yankalilla had one of those rarest of things; an antique shop with realistic prices. Bev bought a couple of things and I would have too were it not for the aforementioned suitcases and airports! To round off a good day we called at Port Noarlunga for fish and chips and drove the coast road for a while
before amazingly! taking the Southern expressway. Today I actually managed to be going in the same direction as the flow of traffic. I am becoming a local!
